Only one fourth of the girls in Tajikistan finished primary school. Primary education is required, but gender discrimination and poverty are the reason why a lot of people still do not finish primary school. Women have very few rights. Under the Soviet system women enjoyed equal civic rights as men. Tajik women the high and political representation was higher than in most western European countries.
Tajikistan is a major transit country for the Afghan narcotics bound for Russia and Wester Europe. Seizure of opiates through Tajikistan is very high, but the country is also a significant consumer of opiates. There is also limited illicit cultivation of opium for domestic use.
